What is BSL?

British Sign Language (BSL) is the official sign language used by the Deaf community in the United Kingdom. It is a rich, visual language that uses a combination of hand shapes, facial expressions, body language, and gestures to communicate.

Unlike spoken English, BSL has its own grammar and structure, making it a complete and distinct language. It’s widely used in everyday communication within the Deaf community and is recognized as one of the official languages of the UK.

BSL is more than a method of communication; it’s a cultural cornerstone for many people. It allows individuals to express themselves fully, access information, and connect with others, regardless of hearing ability.

Learning BSL opens up opportunities to engage with the Deaf community, enhance inclusion, and even explore professional roles such as interpreters, support workers, or educators.
